History of the Tibidabo Airplane

The Tibidabo airplane is one of Barcelona’s most iconic and beloved attractions. It was inaugurated on September 23, 1928, and since then, it has been one of the main features of the city’s oldest amusement park. This attraction was promoted by Dr. Salvador Andreu, who also led the urbanization of the mountain and the creation of the park at the end of the 19th century.

The original airplane model is an almost identical replica of the first aircraft to fly from Barcelona to Madrid in 1927, a major event at the time. It was built at the Estrada Workshops in Sarrià and designed by the Fath engineers under the direction of Marià Rubió. Powered by its own propeller, the Tibidabo airplane was considered the first flight simulator in history, allowing visitors to experience the sensation of flying without ever leaving the ground.

Since its inauguration, the airplane has made over 47,000 trips and completed more than 140,000 circuits, covering a distance equivalent to twenty trips around the world. The attraction, known for a time as “Tibi-air,” still preserves original features such as its 1933 radio station and its vintage interior.
