Museu del Càntir

The Museu del Càntir d'Argentona preserves and celebrates the tradition of one of Catalonia's most iconic everyday objects: the traditional water jug. Every year, the museum commissions a renowned designer or architect to reinterpret this piece of ceramic heritage, creating a unique collection that brings together Catalan tradition, contemporary design and artistic creativity.

Museu del Càntir d'Argentona – Where Catalan tradition meets contemporary design

Few objects represent Catalan popular culture as well as the traditional càntir, a ceramic drinking water jug. For generations, it has been part of everyday life in homes, fields and village squares, combining a simple, practical shape with a distinctive cultural identity.

The Museu del Càntir d'Argentona is dedicated to preserving, studying and celebrating this heritage, keeping alive a tradition deeply rooted in Catalan culture.

Located in Argentona, in the Maresme region near Barcelona, the museum is a leading cultural institution devoted to traditional water jugs and ceramics, combining heritage conservation with the promotion of contemporary artistic expression.

Designer water jugs: a traditional object reimagined

One of the museum's most distinctive initiatives is the annual Càntir de l'Any (Water Jug of the Year), a special creation commissioned for Argentona's traditional Festa del Càntir.

Each edition invites a renowned designer or architect to reinterpret this familiar object through a contemporary creative perspective.

Celebrated designers and architects such as Miguel Milá, André Ricard, Oscar Tusquets, Carme Pinós, Nanimarquina, Javier Mariscal and Benedetta Tagliabue have contributed their personal vision to this remarkable collection.

The resulting pieces preserve a connection with tradition while exploring new shapes, proportions and aesthetic languages, transforming an everyday water jug into an expression of contemporary design.

Designer objects with history and character

These designer water jugs are much more than simple vessels for water. They are objects that connect craftsmanship, cultural heritage and contemporary creativity.

Some reinterpret familiar traditional forms, while others introduce sculptural, minimalist or experimental approaches. Each piece reflects its creator's personality and the artistic spirit of its edition.

They make distinctive decorative objects, collectables and meaningful gifts for lovers of design, ceramics and Catalan culture.

A collection that keeps Catalan ceramic heritage alive

At Oniricat, we share the Museu del Càntir d'Argentona's commitment to preserving familiar objects from our collective memory and giving them new life through design.

That is why we select original designer water jugs that celebrate the meeting of tradition and modernity, connecting our cultural roots with the creative vision of contemporary designers.

Discover Argentona's water jug tradition

The Museu del Càntir d'Argentona is the cultural institution behind this initiative, bringing together heritage, craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Every 4 August, during the celebrations of Saint Dominic and Argentona's local festival, the traditional Festa del Càntir celebrates a custom with roots dating back to the 17th century, including the presentation of the annual Càntir de l'Any.

This living tradition makes every new edition a special part of Argentona's cultural and artistic history.

Museu del Càntir d'Argentona: where tradition becomes design. A collection proving that timeless everyday objects can continue to inspire and delight new generations.
